In a Montessori environment, students learn the fundamental rules of math and science through the discovery of natural laws by working with Montessori materials and problem-solving with peers. The work engages the senses and ensures the internalization of concepts, not just memorization of disjointed facts and figures. It involves the deception of objects that are specially designed that separate the attributes. It sharpens fine muscle skills, visual and auditory senses and improves coordination and the ability to order and differentiate. Language is based on phonetic awareness. Children work using relevant language resources such as sandpaper letters that move to the moving alphabet. Language is not a single subject but it does work in the curriculum. Spoken language is the basis of literacy.
Mathematics is developed through the use of tangible learning materials or concrete learning materials. The sensorial area is the preparation for mathematics. Hands-on materials are used such as number rods, sandpaper numbers, number boards, spindle box, number tiles, beads, and games. Each exercise builds upon another and the child gradually moves to from concrete to abstract areas such as place value, addition, subtraction, multiplication, and fractions.
The Culture Curriculum incorporates a wide range of subjects, including: Geography, Botany, Zoology, Science, History, Music and Art. Through explorations of culture, children develop an understanding of their community, their world, and their social responsibilities. Children learn to respond to diversity with respect, appreciate music and art, and develop awareness of sustainability.
